(1) The aptitude assessment procedure described here serves to determine whether an applicant has the subject-specific aptitude required for admission to the Master's degree program in “Computer Science”.
(2) The aptitude assessment procedure is conducted by the examination board for the Master's degree programs of the Department of Computer Science, based on applications submitted by prospective students. The application procedure, including application deadlines in particular, is announced on the department's web pages.
(3) An applicant's aptitude is assessed based on the following documents, which must be submitted with the enrollment application in German or English:
- a degree certificate from the previous study program showing the final grade and completed achievements (for example in the form of an Academic Transcript, Transcript of Records), or equivalent proof of achievements from previous studies and, where applicable, further documents,
- a description of the contents of the achievements documented under No. 1,
- a statement of motivation for the intended studies and an explanation of the applicant's study goals, and
- a presentation of professional and personal development, where applicable with an explanation of practical knowledge and experience.
(4) The aptitude assessment procedure for the Master's degree program in Computer Science consists of two steps:
- In the equivalence assessment, the applicant's previous university
degree is compared with the corresponding RPTU Bachelor's degree in
Computer Science in terms of scope, content, and orientation. If the
previous degree is at least equivalent, the equivalence assessment is
passed. Otherwise, the examination board may impose missing coursework
and examinations from the corresponding Bachelor's program, up to a
maximum of 30 credit points, to be completed as requirements pursuant to
§ 2a. If equivalence cannot be established even with such
requirements, the applicant is not considered suitable for the Master's
degree program in Computer Science.
Equivalence to the Bachelor's degree program in Computer Science is given if applicants can provide coursework and examination achievements from these three compulsory sections of the Bachelor's degree program:
- at least 30 credit points in “Theoretical Foundations”
- at least 30 credit points in “Software Development”
- at least 30 credit points in “Computer Systems”
- The subject-specific aptitude is assessed based on the following
criteria:
- knowledge of the English language (in accordance with § 2 (6) of the examination regulations for the Master's degree program in Computer Science at RPTU),
- competencies acquired in previous studies, and
- practical knowledge and experience that are beneficial for the Master's degree program.
(5) The determination of an applicant's aptitude results in a final assessment of either “suitable” or “not suitable”. If aptitude cannot be determined based on the application documents, the examination board may request additional documents or ask the applicant to give a presentation to the examination board.
(6) An aptitude assessment procedure that ended with the assessment “not suitable” may be repeated no earlier than after one year.
(7) The applicant receives written notification of the result of the aptitude assessment procedure, including information on legal remedies. A written record is prepared for all conducted aptitude assessment procedures. File inspection is governed accordingly by § 24.
