"Interaction with Responsible Immersive Intelligent Systems"

Immersive technologies create digital environments that either overlay the physical world with digital content (augmented reality, AR) or build entirely virtual worlds (virtual reality, VR) that are perceived as psychologically real by users. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into immersive technologies has opened up new opportunities, such as dynamically generating content for AR/VR and enabling interactions with embodied intelligent agents. The combination of the generative and adaptive capabilities of AI systems with the immersive qualities of AR/VR creates powerful systems capable of addressing societal challenges in health (e.g., therapy) or education (e.g., personalised educational agents). However, this development also raises serious ethical concerns, particularly regarding the risks of deception, manipulation, loss of autonomy, and potential misuse. In this talk, I present my research toward my vision of responsible immersive intelligent systems that enhance people's lives, while also raising awareness of the potential biases and negative consequences associated with interacting with such systems.

Bio: Teresa Hirzle is an Assistant Professor (TT) in the Human-Centred Computing Section at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Copenhagen and the Pioneer Centre for AI in Copenhagen. She received her PhD in computer science from Ulm University in 2022. Her research lies at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Immersive Technologies, and Artificial Intelligence. In her work she combines theory, prototyping, and user evaluation to study human behaviour with immersive intelligent systems. Drawing on behavioural, motivational, and cognitive theories, she designs and assesses these systems through mixed-methods studies using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Her work is regularly published in high-impact HCI and VR conferences and journals, such as CHI and TOCHI, and she regularly serves as an associate chair for the flagship HCI conference CHI and VR-specific venues, such as VRST.
